Guillermo Almada was the frontrunner to take over as Cruz Azul’s head coach. However, in a sudden turn of events, the Sky Blues’ management decided to stop pursuing the Uruguayan strategist and continue scouting for candidates to fill the position ahead of the upcoming Liga MX season.

According to transfer-market expert César Luis Merlo, Cruz Azul opted to end their push for Almada in order to avoid potential disputes with Pachuca’s management. Despite this decision, the club remains active in its search for a new head coach through other avenues.

Although the Uruguayan coach had the most support within Cruz Azul, the club ultimately decided not to move forward with him, as they were keen to avoid conflicts with the Tuzos.

Cruz Azul have Milito in mind

One of the leading candidates for the position is Matías Almeyda, but the Argentine coach has no immediate plans to return to Mexican soccer. In fact, Monterrey had also been pursuing Almeyda before ultimately appointing Domenec Torrent.

Meanwhile, Cruz Azul’s sporting director, Iván Alonso, has Gabriel Milito among his top choices for the role. The club’s management continues to evaluate multiple candidates, ensuring they find the right fit for the upcoming season. For now, Almada is expected to remain with Pachuca, where he will lead the team in the Club World Cup.

Vicente Sánchez will coach Cruz Azul in the Concachampions final against the Vancouver Whitecaps before departing from the team.

According to journalist César Caballero, Sánchez requested immediate bonus payments from the club to complete his tenure—whether or not he secures a championship for La Máquina.
