Update:

Teófimo López (22-1-0, 13 KOs) has been signaling his intention to move up to welterweight for some time. After his latest successful defense of his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super lightweight title, he called out one of the champions: Jaron Ennis (34-0-0, 30 KOs), the unified IBF and WBA champion. British Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn announced that negotiations are underway to organize the fight.

“We’re in talks for Jaron to fight Teófimo, it’s a great fight. There’s a date in August we could be considering in Saudi Arabia,” Hearn told FightHype. López, former undisputed lightweight champion and current super lightweight titleholder, has had in mind for a while to move up a division. After his last fight at Times Square, where he successfully defended his crown by unanimous decision over Arnold Barboza (32-1-0, 11 KOs), he called out the welterweight champ.

Ennis won the IBF title in July 2024, stopping David Avanesyan (31-5-1, 19 KOs)—a familiar name in Spanish boxing (he knocked out Kerman Lejarraga twice in Bilbao and later did the same to José del Río)—before the final bell. He defended the belt on points against Karen Chukhadzhian (25-3-0, 13 KOs) and, a month ago, unified the division by defeating Eimantas Stanionis (15-1-0, 9 KOs), the WBA champion.

Although talks are still at an early stage, Hearn is optimistic about the fight. Ennis and his team aim to become the undisputed champion. The other two major belts are held by Mario Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOs) of the WBC and Brian Norman Jr. (27-0-0, 21 KOs) of the WBO. A fight with Teófimo is a solid option for Jaron, as he is one of the rising stars globally and it could give him significant visibility and a lucrative purse.
