Eye spills and a smashed mouth: the ravages of the UFC’s biggest beast
Kevin Holland confessed that the chokehold he endured caused him to suffer eye bleeding. Last February, he also had his mouth shattered by another submission.
Khamzat Chimaev is the human embodiment of what many would consider a nightmare. Born in Chechnya and raised on the streets of Sweden, he is the next contender for the middleweight title, a position he earned by leaving a trail of battered opponents behind him.
Recently, images surfaced showing the state of Kevin Holland’s face after ‘The Borz’ (meaning The Wolf in Chechen) submitted him with a brutal D’Arce Choke. The American fighter suffered ocular bleeding due to the intense pressure placed on his veins and arteries before he was inevitably forced to tap out.
After that, Chimaev inflicted a devastating injury on one of the division’s top stars: Robert Whittaker Jr. In a fight that was initially expected to be much more balanced, the Chechen-born Swede locked in a rear-naked choke so tightly that he shattered Whittaker’s jaw and sank in his teeth at the same time.
An unmatched force
Since his debut in the UFC, Chimaev has been a recurring nightmare, delivering destruction fight after fight. His early performances were so quick and explosive that many doubted his skill, attributing his wins to the low level of competition.
However, the now 31-year-old fighter has continued to dominate convincingly against every opponent—except Gilbert Burns, who, for the first time, made him look human in what is considered one of the greatest fights in UFC history.
This August, the UFC’s true nightmare will face his final obstacle before taking over the middleweight division. He’ll attempt to dethrone reigning champion Dricus Du Plessis and claim the championship belt at UFC 319 on August 16.
