Update:

It’s NFL Draft Day and speculation if rife regarding the all-important No. 1 pick.

This year’s draft will be held in Green Bay, Wisconsin from Thursday, April 24 to Saturday, April 26. With no consensus No. 1 pick all eyes will be on the Tennessee Titans to see who they will select.

The Titans endured a torrid 2024 season, ensuring that they take the first pick at this year’s draft. But their 3-14 record was actually equalled by the Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants. With three identical records, why were the Titans awarded the first pick?

NFL rules dictate that teams with identical records will be split “by figuring the aggregate won-lost-tied percentage of each involved club’s regular season opponents and awarding preferential selection order to the club which faced the schedule of teams with the lowest aggregate won-lost-tied percentage.”

In short, its a measure of the strength of the opponents that they face. In 2024 the Titans’ opponents had a combined record of .522, slightly worse than the Browns’ (.536) and the Giants’ (.554). This suggests that Tennessee were in fact the worst team across 2024 and so they claim the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft.

It’s a big decision for the Titans, who need to improve their quarterback options ahead of the 2025 season. They met both Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward during the NFL Combine last month, with Ward looking like the more likely pick.

However the Titans could also choose to ditch their No. 1 pick and trade for an existing NFL player. They have made clear that they are looking for a “generational” QB to make it worth using their No. 1 pick and the general manager has floated the idea that they could be open to a trade.

“If someone’s trading up for a quarterback, that means there’s a lot of value in it,” Tennessee GM Mike Borgonzi said. “It could be another position as well too. Anytime you trade out of the No. 1 pick, you expect a big return.”

For now, fans will just have to wait and see. It’s a crucial offseason for Tennessee and head coach Brian Callahan, who is preparing for his second season in charge. If he is given a stellar new quarterback Callahan will hope to transform an offense that ranked 26th for total passing yards in 2024.
