Stephen A. Smith rips the Cowboys’ trade for Pickens: “At least they’re not going to stink in September”

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith can’t pass up an opportunity to troll the Cowboys, and since they dominated the headlines yesterday, he gave his 2 cents as usual.

Update:

On Wednesday, the Dallas Cowboys made headlines with a blockbuster trade for wide receiver George Pickens. They traded away a third-round draft pick in 2025 and a fifth-round in 2026 to the Pittsburgh Steelers, gaining Pickens and a 2026 sixth-round.

While Pickens is a talented player, his off-the-field issues made some question whether or not this was a wise decision. After the Cowboys’ lack of moves last offseason, leading to one of their worst seasons in years, however, fans are happy to see something being done.

It’s not that this was clearly a bad trade - time will tell if the CeeDee Lamb-George Pickens duo will be as dynamic as its potential. Indeed, many analysts see it as a positive move by Dallas. But the Cowboys fans have a reputation for getting ahead of themselves, and the haters and trolls love to see it.

Stephen A. Smith trolls Cowboys over Pickens trade

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith may be one of the Cowboys’ biggest haters, and no matter what decision they make, he will call it a poor one. So of course, he took this opportunity to share his thoughts on the Pickens trade.

During ESPN’s First Take, Smith said he was minding his own business focusing on the NBA playoffs when the Cowboys “stole the headlines” as they always do. He mocked them for the Pickens trade, saying it “looks good on paper” but will only serve to fool the fans into thinking they’re good again, temporarily.

“This dude is supposed to be a headache. You’ve got a new coach that nobody wanted... you got Dak Prescott, who’s allergic to prosperity come playoff time,” Smith started.

He went on to criticize the lack of a running game (or moves to improve it) in Dallas, and that the Cowboys will be relying on passing more often next season, giving Prescott more opportunities to “make a mistake when it matters most.”

“Congratulations to the Cowboys,” Smith mocked. “I’m sure it looks good on paper as it always does... They’re going to go back to teasing us into believing that they’re relevant.”

For the non-delusional Cowboy fan, and for the non-hating troll - in other words, if one can look at this trade objectively - you can see that it’s not a bad move at all. Fans have been begging the team to get a reliable WR2 to take the pressure off of Lamb, and that’s what they’ve done. Will this move alone make them Super Bowl contenders? No. Does it make them a slightly better team than they were before the move? Highly probable, yes. And that was the point. But Stephen A. Smith is blinded by the sunlight coming in from the AT&T Stadium dome, and can only see negative where Dallas is concerned.
