Update:

The San Francisco 49ers have moved to tie down another key player, signing a contract extension with a key defensive piece.

Linebacker Fred Warner has agreed a new three-year contract extension with the team. NFL Network reports that the deal is worth up to $63 million, with $56.7 million in guaranteed payments.

The 28-year-old joined the 49ers in the 2018 NFL Draft, arriving as a third round pick from BYU. To say that he’s exceeded expectations would be an understatement. Warner has established himself as a key player and has started all but one regular season game since joining San Francisco.

Warner has been named in the Pro Bowl First Team on four occasions, including each of the past three seasons. The 49ers were eager to tie him down despite already having two years remaining on the five-year, $95 million deal signed in 2021.

The extension allows San Francisco to restructure his contract and make extra room in the salary cap, needed to facilitate the huge $265 million deal handed to quarterback Brock Purdy last week.

Still, the new deal gives Warner an average annual earnings of $21 million per season, making him the highest-paid off-ball linebackers in the NFL. With Warner, Purdy and George Kittle now signed to new deals, the 49ers have got their most important offseason business sorted with plenty of time before the new campaign.
