QB controversy: the top-10 list that has NFL fuming | Several big names overlooked
Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson head up one list of the NFL’s top quarterbacks, although the absence of other stars has fans perplexed.

Who are the 10 best quarterbacks in the NFL today? A question you’d likely get 100 different answers to if you ask 100 different people.
‘Top 10’ discussions on almost any topic inevitably generate endless debate and no shortage of criticism, as proven by Yahoo Sports’ list of the league’s best quarterbacks entering the 2025 NFL season, which has been widely shared on social media.
Is Mahomes still the best quarterback in the NFL?
For NFL analysts Nate Tice and Charles McDonald, Patrick Mahomes holds onto his place as the greatest QB around despite his disastrous showing at Super Bowl LIX. You’d think the man who overshadowed him in New Orleans on February 9 would be a shoo-in for a place on the board, but you’d be wrong.
On the podium below the Chiefs star are Josh Allen, who led the Bills to the AFC Championship Game last season, and Lamar Jackson of the Ravens, who lost to Buffalo in the AFC divisional playoffs. Tice and McDonald had them in a different order in their individual lists, which had some fairly minor differences.
Top 10 NFL quarterbacks
Their respective top 10s are as follows:
Nate Tice
- Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs)
- Josh Allen (Bills)
- Lamar Jackson (Ravens)
- Joe Burrow (Bengals)
- Justin Herbert (Chargers)
- Matthew Stafford (Rams)
- Jordan Love (Packers)
- Dak Prescott (Cowboys)
- Trevor Lawrence (Jaguars)
- C.J. Stroud (Texans)
Charles McDonald
- Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs)
- Lamar Jackson (Ravens)
- Josh Allen (Bills)
- Joe Burrow (Bengals)
- Justin Herbert (Chargers)
- Matthew Stafford (Rams)
- Dak Prescott (Cowboys)
- Geno Smith (Raiders)
- Jordan Love (Packers)
- C.J. Stroud (Texans)
The rankings hit a nerve with plenty online, with several commenters accusing Yahoo Sports of sneakily trying to get clicks through ‘rage bait’.
We wouldn’t dare go that far, although many NFL fans appear to be in agreement that there are some glaring omissions from both top 10s.
Super Bowl LIX MVP Jalen Hurts was the man whose absence perplexed most on both X and Reddit.
Football fans rage over Hurts absence
“Surely the Super Bowl MVP would be a top 10 QB on a rankings list right?,” commented one X user named @ThatHurts, who confesses to being a “passionate Jalen Hurts fan” and therefore may not be completely impartial.
#Eagles QB Jalen Hurts Adjusted Completion % since becoming starter in 2021:
— Jake Rabadi (@JakeRabadiNFL) June 24, 2025
2024: 80.4% (1st in NFL)
2023: 75.8% (11th in NFL)
2022: 77.4% (7th in NFL)
2021: 72.4% (23rd in NFL) pic.twitter.com/Jh3b4kdi56
Plenty of others were in agreement, though. “Did Jalen Hurts retire?” was one of the cheekier responses, while another went in hard on poor old Trevor Lawrence: “Having Lawrence over Hurts is an absolute travesty”.
“Jalen Hurts not even in the top 10 is straight-up wild to me. MVP runner-up, Super Bowl trips, back-to-back playoffs and y’all keep disrespecting him,” was perhaps the most complete argument for the Eagles quarterback.
Top quarterbacks candidates: Goff, Daniels, Mayfield...
There was also plenty of love for Lions star Jared Goff, fresh from a 15-2 regular season, and the Commanders’ Jayden Daniels, the Offensive Rookie of the Year for 2024.
“I was so annoyed to not see Goff on the top 10 that I completely missed the Super Bowl MVP wasn’t either. What a joke of a list,” fumed one Reddit user.
“No Hurts, Goff, or Daniels? What in the world?” queried another, backed up by a third. “No Hurts, Daniels, or Goff, but Stroud, Geno, Prescott, and Herbert are on there lmfao”.
There were also several shouts for Baker Mayfield of the Bucs, who is “easily clear 7-10 on this list,” according to one fan.
The Raiders’ Geno Smith and Dak Prescott of the struggling Cowboys were just behind Lawrence in the “What’s he doing in the top 10?” ranking, although they did also have a few backers.
Whether you agree with Yahoo Sports’ rankings or not, two things are clear - NFL quarterback debates aren’t going away anytime soon, and you’ll probably never fully agree with any top 10 list.
