Update:

The Colorado Buffaloes have tied down head coach Deion Sanders with a monster five-year deal that makes him one of the highest-paid football coaches in the country, across both the NCAA and NFL.

ESPN reports that the contract extension is worth $54 million, with a starting base salary of $10 million for 2025 and gradually increases to $12 million for the 2029 season. The initial buy-out is set at $12 million for the remainder of 2025, dropping to $3 million in 2029.

Across his two season with the team Sanders helped to revitalise a program that went 1-11 in 2022. Last season he led the team to nine wins and an appearance in the Alamo Bowl and made them one of the most-watched teams in the entire NCAA. Buffaloes games drew a television audience of more than 54 million in the 2024 and the 8 million who watched the Alamo Bowl defeat to BYU set a new record for the event.

The school has credited Sanders for a 20% increase in applicants in the past year, while applications from Black/African American students have jumped by 50.5%. For his part, Sanders has insisted that his work in Colorado is just beginning.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to continue building something special here at Colorado,” Sanders said. “We’ve just scratched the surface of what this program can be. It’s not just about football; it’s about developing young men who are ready to take on the world. I’m committed to bringing greatness to this university, on and off the field.”

He continued: “We’ve got work to do, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but here, making history with these incredible players and this passionate fan base. Lastly, anybody got at least a five-bedroom home with acreage for sale?”

Coach Prime has revolutionized college football and in doing so, has restored CU football to our rightful place as a national power,” said Colorado athletic director Rick George in a statement. “This extension not only recognizes coach’s incredible accomplishments transforming our program on and off the field, it keeps him in Boulder to compete for conference and national championships in the years to come.”
