After weeks of speculation, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder is set to be crowned NBA Most Valuable Player.

On Wednesday afternoon ESPN announced that the 26-year-old will be named the MVP, beating off competition from Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic. Throughout the regular season SGA starred for the Thunder, recording a career-best average of 32.7 points per game.

His shooting has been impressive too, with a 51.9% accuracy from the field and a 37.5% rate from three-point range. His Thunder team finished the regular season with the best record in the league.

This is the first time that Gilgeous-Alexander has won the prestigious award and he joins an illustrious list of NBA stars. Here’s a look back at every other player who has won the award in its 70-year history...

Speaking after the Thunder’s Game 1 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, former Nuggets head coach Michael Malone was full of praise for SGA.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, he showed why he’s the MVP,” Malone said after the game. “He took over in the second half. Did so in a very efficient manner, and he put the team on his back.”
