Update:

The Dallas Mavericks had a 1.8% chance of being awarded the No. 1 pick, but a chance is a chance - and the Mavs were rewarded. After a cursed 2024 season that saw them trade their star player for - let’s be honest - peanuts, the basketball gods hath had mercy. (Or it’s rigged - believe what you will.)

Either way, the Mavs are getting the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and they apparently already know what they’ll do with it.

Mavericks will not trade the No. 1 pick

The Mavericks have reportedly made it clear that they have no intention of trading the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.

“The Mavericks are not going to trade their No. 1 pick,” said NBA writer Marc J. Spears.

There was some concern that they would make the same mistake twice - trading away a good thing for a less good thing, that is. There was even some cheeky chatter that they would trade it to the Los Angeles Lakers to get Luka Doncic back again.

In the end, it looks like the Mavs will be wise and keep the pick, especially after having given away much of their future draft capital.

Mavs owner Patrick Dumont referred to the top pick as “a gift” which he does not intend to waste. Of course, the expectation is that Dallas will take Duke’s Cooper Flagg first overall. Mavs CEO Rick Welts had nothing but praise for the young prospect.

“I don’t know who we’re going to take, but should we take [Flagg]? I think his resume is pretty strong,” Welts said. “Every time he’s put in a situation that everyone wondered if he could succeed, he’s succeeded and then some.”

Dallas already has at least $192 million in guaranteed contracts for the 2025 season, with uncertainties surrounding Kyrie Irving and Dwight Powell’s contracts. Irving, who’s likely to be out the majority of the 2025 season, holds a player option worth $42 million, and Powell’s is valued at $4 million. Spencer Dinwiddie and Dante Exum, meanwhile, are set to become unrestricted free agents.
