Update:

After 12 seasons with the team, it looks increasingly likely that Giannis Antetokounmpo will be leaving the Milwaukee Bucks this summer.

The nine-time All-Star has been a dominant force in Milwaukee, becoming one of the most decorated players in NBA history. In 2021 the ‘Greek Freak’ led the Bucks to a championship for the first time since 1971.

Things have regressed since that championship and the Bucks have now been eliminated from the first round of the playoffs for the past three seasons. Shortly after the latest elimination, ESPN reported that Giannis is planning to “explore” options outside of Milwaukee, prioritizing another championship.

On Sunday new reports from CBS Sports claimed that Giannis and the Bucks hierarchy will sit down this week to discuss the team’s direction. This meeting with the front office could be the team’s best chance of convincing him to stay in Milwaukee, but they have a lot of work to do.

In the past the Bucks have managed to secure Giannis’ future with big-name trades, bringing in Jrue Holiday (2020) and Damian Lillard (2023) to convince the superstar that the project was still progressing. However the Lillard trade has not paid off - largely due to injuries - and he’s expected to miss the majority of next season after tearing his Achilles in the first round loser to the Indiana Pacers.

Even before this year’s disappointment, Giannis had hinted that he would prioritize winning another ring over sticking with the Bucks. In 2023 he told The New York Times: “Winning a championship comes first. I don’t want to be 20 years on the same team and don’t win another championship.”
