Toronto Blue Jays CF Daulton Varsho on his behind-the-back catch: “I just stuck my glove out and somehow it went in”

After slipping mid-play, Varsho cursed, recovered, and still pulled off one of the wildest catches baseball has ever seen.

Update:

On Tuesday, Red Sox left fielder Jarren Duran connected solidly with a deep straight drive that was headed out Daulton Varsho’s way, giving the 28-year-old a pretty decent chance of a catch. But as he sized up the ball headed his way, Varsha’s legs went from under him and he tumbled to the turf. Chance over… but somehow, no!

Varsho managed to get to his knees, but now facing the wall, he managed to stick out his gloved left hand and somehow plucked the ball out of the air.

“I just stuck my glove out and somehow it went in,” said the Wisconsin-born outfielder. And he went on to admit: “It was probably a really high percent probability of a catch and I made it look really hard.”

No word of a lie there… Statcast put the catch probability at 95%. Though it had probably fallen to about 0.3% when Varsho was on his backside with the ball dropping precipitously.

What went through his mind as he fell? Varsho admitted he’d said a “profanity word” before refocusing on where the ball might be.

Red Sox hitter Rafael Deversa admitted: “I have never seen a play like that. Kudos to him. Great play. That was an amazing play.” What’s also true is it’s easier to say that kind of thing when you’ve coasted to a 10-2 win.

Varsho is the reigning Gold Glove Award winner

Incredible catches like this one shouldn’t really surprise us at this point. Varsho is the reigning Gold Glove award winner, having performed outstandingly last season.

Manager John Schneider never stopped saying it last season: “Daulton Varsho is the best outfielder in baseball”. And seems like this season it still rings true.
