The version of Fortnite for Nintendo Switch 2 shows that its performance is similar to Xbox Series S

Fortnite will have a new version on Switch 2, and what was shown shows that Nintendo’s console offers similar performance to Xbox Series S.

During last April 2’s Nintendo Direct, not only was the Nintendo Switch 2 unveiled with its launch catalog, but new versions of games that have been on the market for several years, such as Fortnite, were also announced. While this particular announcement was not unexpected, as the title is present on all current platforms, its appearance on Switch 2 serves to better contextualize Nintendo’s new hybrid within the current gaming console landscape.

Fortnite will have a new version on Nintendo Switch 2, which hints at its power and hardware

Around the 1:20:45 mark of the Nintendo Direct on Wednesday, April 2, Fortnite appeared as one of the new games coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 on its launch day next June 5, 2025. Although the announcement itself is not very significant, since it was expected that the popular Epic Games title would receive a specific version for Switch 2, what was most striking was the gameplay presented: it is a version comparable to the Xbox Series S. This highlights the great contrast with the version present on the first Switch, which is similar to the one available on mobile phones and has a lower performance and resolution than the versions on other desktop consoles.

Although Nintendo did not announce the technical specifications of its new console in the Nintendo Direct itself, it did announce them on its website, and they are as follows:

  • CPU/GPU: NVIDIA custom processor.
  • Internal storage: 256 GB UFS.
  • Video output: Up to 4K 60 fps in TV mode or 120 fps in 1080p and 1440p resolutions.

However, even with the data provided by Nintendo itself, the full technical specifications are not known, as the actual power of both the processor and its graphics card are unknown, as is its RAM. Nevertheless, a reasonable guess based on the footage seen in Fortnite would put the console on par with an Xbox Series S, which has the following hardware:

  • CPU: Custom AMD 8-core Zen 2 3.6 GHz 8-core chip or 3.4 GHz with SMT
  • GPU: Custom AMD Radeon RDNA 2 20 CUs 1.565 GHz 4.006 TFLOPS graphics card.
  • RAM: 8GB/128-bit GDDR6 SDRAM and 2GB/32-bit.
  • Internal storage: WD SN530 NVMe SSD with PCIe 4.0 x2 support; 512GB (Robot White consoles) and 1TB (Carbon Black/Robot White consoles).

In the few seconds of video in which Fortnite could be seen running on a Switch 2 console, it shows performance comparable to the Xbox Series S version - good visual fidelity and 60 FPS - which would suggest that while the Series S hardware appears to be superior to the Switch 2, Nintendo’s new console could use certain tricks like DLSS to improve its performance.

Indirectly, Fortnite would serve as a benchmark or reliable indicator to compare the performance of both consoles. In addition, Epic Games itself announced that it would extend Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5 support to the Switch 2, allowing these technologies to finally shine in their own light within a Nintendo console.

While the Nintendo Switch 2 may fall short of the Xbox Series S in terms of raw performance, NVIDIA technologies such as Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) could “artificially” improve performance. This technique allows the system to generate additional frames from existing visual information, resulting in an experience comparable to that of superior hardware. It is not confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will use DLSS, but this is an educated guess based on what has been shown and taking into account the console’s NVIDIA chipset.
