The Game Awards 2024

The Game Awards 2024 presented their first-ever Game Changers Award in an incredibly heartfelt moment

The video games industry is in a tough spot, and this didn’t go unnoticed during the Game Awards, which celebrated a particular man for his massive efforts.

Amir Satvat

In one of the best ceremonies of The Game Awards we’ve seen so far, there were many surprises, like the revelations of titles such as Elden Ring: Nighreign, The Witcher 4, and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the new game from Naughty Dog. But far from the big spotlights, there are also big protagonists, as is the case of Aamir Satvat, first-ever winner of the Game Changer Award in the history of the event.

Who is Amir Satvat and why did he win a Game Changer Award?

We have been enjoying great video games during the past two years, but the industry has also been a complete disaster when it comes to job security studio closures. Amir Satvat has been working in the shadows all this time to help as many of those who have lost their jobs to find a new one, receiving this well-deserved standing ovation that was undoubtedly the most emotional moment of this edition of The Game Awards.

This is not the first time that Geoff has mentioned this difficult time the industry is going through, having also recalled in the past Summer Game Fest to all those affected by the thousands of layoffs in recent years. “You can’t make great games without great people. What more can we do to improve our industry?”Satvat said during his speech.

“We see the numbers and sometimes we forget that these are real people” said Satvat at the time. “Even when the numbers get bigger and bigger, you can stop paying attention. My friends wanted something that would make it easier to look for a job. I thought ‘I’m very good at doing Excel worksheets, I could do something to achieve that.’”

And he did it to the point of getting this first Game Changer award from The Game Awards. We do not know if Geoff Keighley will continue to award awards in this category, but it is undoubtedly an important initiative to raise awareness that beyond great video games, the situation in the industry is complicated and actions like Satvat’s are necessary.
