Google is shutting down a major service: here’s what users will have to do without it

Google is officially removing Google Assistant from its Fitbit smartwatches and fitness trackers. This means that future generations of Fitbit devices will no longer support voice commands via Assistant, marking a significant shift for users who relied on the feature.

The change affects models like:

  • Fitbit Sense, Sense 2
  • Fitbit Versa 2, Versa 3, Versa 4

Users may have already seen a notification on their devices stating:

“Google Assistant on Fitbit watches is being turned down. This feature will stop working in the coming weeks.”

Gemini AI is taking over

Google is replacing Assistant with Gemini, its new AI-powered assistant. While Gemini is being developed for Wear OS smartwatches, it won’t be available on Fitbit OS, meaning older Fitbit models won’t receive the upgrade.

In the future, Gemini is expected to expand to:

  • Android Auto
  • Google TV
  • The Google app

Should users reconsider their smartwatch options?

With Google Assistant disappearing, users who prioritize voice control may need to rethink their smartwatch choices.

One alternative is the Pixel Watch, which already features full Gemini AI integration. However, Google has not provided solutions for existing Fitbit Sense and Versa users, whose voice assistant functionality will be completely shut down in the coming weeks.

For now, Amazon Alexa remains available on Fitbit devices in supported regions like the US.
