Apple reveals its masterstroke: iOS 19 will use AI to make your battery last much longer

Apple Intelligence brings AI-driven battery management to iOS 19: longer-lasting power for all iPhones.

This week the UK government issued new guidance backing headteachers in prohibiting the use of mobile phones throughout the school day, including at break times. Many schools around the country are already prohibiting mobile phone use over concerns. The amount of time children spend on screens each day rocketed during the Covid pandemic by more than 50 per cent, the equivalent of an extra hour and twenty minutes. Researchers say that unmoderated screen time can have long-lasting effects on a child's mental and physical health. Recently TikTok announced that every account belonging to a user below age 18 have a 60-minute daily screen time limit automatically set. (Photo by Matt Cardy/Getty Images)

Apple is taking battery optimization to the next level with iOS 19, introducing AI-powered battery management that learns from your usage habits to make your iPhone last significantly longer between charges.

How AI will improve battery life

The new system, part of Apple’s Apple Intelligence platform, will use on-device AI to analyze how users interact with their iPhones. By studying app usage, charging patterns, and background activity, iOS 19 will dynamically adjust power consumption to reduce unnecessary drain.

Some key features include:

  • Smart app management – The AI will limit background activity for apps that aren’t frequently used, preventing them from consuming excess power.
  • Adaptive charging insights – A new lock screen indicator will show how long it will take to fully charge your iPhone, giving users a clearer view of their battery status.
  • Predictive power adjustments – The system will preemptively adjust settings based on usage trends, ensuring that power is allocated efficiently.

Apple’s approach is similar to Google’s Adaptive Battery feature, but with deeper integration into iOS, allowing for more precise optimizations.

Designed for the iPhone 17—but available for all iPhones

While iOS 19’s AI-powered battery optimization is available for all compatible iPhones, it has been specifically designed with the upcoming iPhone 17 Air in mind. The new model is expected to feature a thinner design and a smaller battery, making AI-driven power management essential for maintaining battery life.

Apple is expected to announce iOS 19 at WWDC on June 9, with a public release scheduled for September alongside the iPhone 17 lineup.

With AI-driven battery optimization, iOS 19 is set to significantly improve iPhone battery life, making power management smarter and more efficient. Whether you’re using an older iPhone or upgrading to the iPhone 17, Apple’s AI enhancements will ensure longer-lasting power without compromising performance.
