They sent a drone into the depths of the hole in the sea: what they found chilled their blood
A content creator outfitted a drone with a GoPro camera to capture footage inside Belize’s Great Blue Hole.

Off the coast of Belize, in the Caribbean Sea, lies a captivating natural wonder familiar to any nature photography enthusiast: the Great Blue Hole. This perfectly circular sinkhole in the middle of the ocean holds all the mystery an explorer could hope for—it’s dark, largely uncharted, and visually irresistible.
Discovered by the legendary diver Jacques Cousteau, the Great Blue Hole has since drawn sailors and divers alike, eager to uncover what lies beneath its deep blue surface.
One adventurer, content creator Will Mitchell, had been fascinated by the site for a long time and decided to explore it himself. To achieve this, he mounted a GoPro camera on a drone with the goal of mapping the depths of the hole. As is often the case in these deep, isolated ocean areas, the drone’s footage was both stunning and haunting.
At the start of the dive, the camera revealed a vibrant underwater world, full of marine life and colourful species. But as the drone descended—eventually reaching a depth of 90 meters—the imagery turned stark. The vibrant life gave way to a dark, barren landscape, where little survives due to the lack of sunlight.
The dive also came with a few unexpected moments, including a tense encounter with a curious shark. Upon noticing the drone, the shark launched an attack, putting the device at risk. Fortunately, it soon lost interest and swam off, leaving the drone intact—and the footage complete.
