Update:

Some Social Security recipients in the U.S. are set to get a monthly benefits check later this week.

Two groups of beneficiaries are in line to receive money on Thursday, which is the second July payment date on the Social Security Administration (SSA)’s calendar.

Who gets paid by Social Security on Thursday, July 3?

  • Long-term Social Security beneficiaries

The SSA is due to send out checks to certain long-term recipients of Social Security: specifically, those who began claiming retirement benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or survivor pay before May 1997.

  • Beneficiaries who also claim SSI

The agency is also scheduled to issue retirement, SSDI or survivor money to claimants who combine any of these benefits with Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

A separate scheme that does not depend on payment of Social Security taxes, SSI is aimed at low-income Americans who are over 65 or have a disability. This month’s SSI benefits should have been paid on Tuesday, July 1.

How much are retirement, SSDI and survivor benefits?

Retired workers - who make up the vast majority of Social Security recipients - are paid an average of $2,002.39 a month, the SSA says. Disabled workers get a monthly average of $1,581.97, and survivor benefits are worth an average of $1,566.66 per month.

How much are monthly SSI benefits?

According to the SSA, SSI beneficiaries get an average of $718.30 a month. The maximum SSI payout available to an individual claimant is $967 per month. Eligible couples can get up to $1,450 per month.

The agency also notes that some SSI recipients may be eligible for a supplementary payment from their state. You can find out which states offer this additional money on the SSA website.

When are other Social Security benefits paid for July 2025?

Most recipients of retirement, SSDI and survivor benefits will be issued their latest monthly benefits on one of three Wednesdays in July. Their designated Wednesday will depend on their date of birth:

  • Born on 1st to 10th of the month: Weds., July 9
  • Born on 11th to 20th of the month: Weds., July 16
  • Born on 21st to 31st of the month: Weds., July 23

You can take a look at the SSA’s complete schedule of payments for 2025 in this online calendar shared by the agency.
