Goodbye to Kohl’s: these are the stores that are closing, affecting 15 different states

Although the news was made public earlier this year, it is only now that the closure of nearly thirty Kohl’s stores is being suffered, affecting shoppers in fifteen states.

In January, the department store became the latest retailer to announce that it would be reducing its physical footprint by shuttering close to three dozen stores as well as an e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California.

Regarding the fulfillment center closure, executives cited “increased efficiencies with new technology capabilities at newer EFC facilities,” which have “expanded the company’s ability to fulfill customer orders from store locations.”

The 27 store closures represent a small fraction of Kohl’s more than 1,150 locations nationwide. Employees impacted by the closures have been offered what the company describes as “a competitive severance package” or the opportunity to apply for other open roles within the company.

Kohl’s is not the only retailer shuttering locations this year

Though executives have tried to strike an optimistic tone, the company’s stock has lost 70% of its value over the past five years as the rise of online shopping continues to diminish the demand for brick-and-mortar retailers. Over the past year alone, the stock has fallen by 48%, making the recent announcement of closures less surprising.

Similar moves have been announced by Macy’s, which planned to close more than 60 locations in the first quarter of 2025. Additionally, JOANN Fabric, which announced that 500 stores would be closed after filing for bankruptcy, later left customers massively disappointed when they changed their plan and reported that all locations would be closed following an auction on the retailer’s remaining assets.
