Elon Musk’s plan when there is a massive electrical blackout like in Spain: “That really happens”.
Self-consumption batteries, combined with a solar roof from his company, could allow any home to have electricity.

Could another blackout like the one Spain has just suffered be repeated in the USA? Yes—and magnate Elon Musk has a solution. From his companies, of course. By combining solar panels—his Solar Roof—with the Tesla Powerwall battery, “you can become self-sufficient, so even if the power grid goes down (even for several days), your house will keep working. And your roof will look amazing. So I recommend anyone who can afford it to get the Tesla Solar Roof and the Powerwall.”
“Your family’s life could depend on it, and in terms of convenience, your kids won’t be yelling at you because their computers don’t work, the power’s out, and they can’t charge their phones. That really happens. You literally can’t even call anyone because your phone ran out of battery,” said Musk, who has 14 acknowledged children from various partners.
Musk’s goal is energy self-sufficiency, which would be achieved through storage batteries. Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, and the Powerwall stores that energy, rather than feeding it back into the grid.
Musk’s Solar Roof Troubles
The product was first unveiled in 2016 and has not lived up to expectations, largely due to setbacks in the manufacturing process. Adding to these issues was Trump’s decision to campaign against solar energy, as one of his first acts in the Oval Office was to sign a memorandum prioritizing all energy forms except wind and solar—the latter being sold by the company behind much of Musk’s wealth.
There’s a difference between what ‘political’ Musk says and what ‘energy entrepreneur’ Musk promotes. Back in 2022, Musk criticized anti-solar policies, yet today he has invested a significant portion of his fortune and personal effort into a group now implementing many of those same policies.
In the United States, the Tesla Powerwall is priced at $9,300 per unit when purchased directly through Tesla. A minimum purchase of one Powerwall plus solar panels or a Tesla Solar Roof is required if buying from Tesla. The estimated total cost for a complete system including one Powerwall, installation, hardware, and permitting typically ranges from $12,000 to $16,500, depending on system complexity, location, and installer fees.Tesla also offers a mobile app for remote monitoring and control, which is included at no extra cost with the system.
