Update:

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at protecting fans from “exploitative ticket scalping” and reforming the U.S. live entertainment ticketing industry.

Trump signed the directive in the Oval Office, with singer Kid Rock present who claimed that ticket scalpers’ use of bots to buy large numbers of tickets at face value and then selling them for a profit is a big problem for the industry.

Major promoter Live Nation Entertainment issued a statement in support of Trump’s order and thanked him for trying to address scalpers and bots.

“We support any meaningful resale reforms — including more enforcement of the BOTS act, caps on resale prices, and more,” the firm said.

Good news for Swift fans?

In the build-up to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, many fans struggled to secure tickets with Ticketmaster having to cancel sales windows due to what they called “extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand.“

Ticketmaster commands more than a 70% market share of primary ticket services for major U.S. concert venues and has come under fire from major artists such as The Cure’s Robert Smith and Neil Young for their practice.

The ticket distribution company faced swift backlash from Taylor Swift fans leading to the singer-songwriter to issue a statement issued at the time: “There are a multitude of reasons why people had such a hard time trying to get tickets and I’m trying to figure out how this situation can be improved moving forward. I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them, multiple times, if they could handle this kind of demand and we were assured they could.” Ticketmaster later faced questions from Congress over the debacle.

The company has also come under fire for the process of sales relating to the Oasis reunion as fans faced issues with Ticketmaster, including ticket cancellations due to alleged bot activity and concerns about dynamic pricing and unclear ticket labelling.
